The article was dedicated to one of the prayers – the Litany to Saint Barbara – in a Baroque Polish-language prayer book addressed to this patroness. It was published in Wrocław in 1747 by the Jesuit order for a fraternity dedicated to Saint Barbara, who was then treated as the patron of a happy death. This confraternity was established in Tarnowskie Góry as the third one in Upper Silesia. However, for the recruitment of members from various regions of Silesia and the fi rst binding of the brotherhood to the mining community, he is given pioneer signifi cance. St Barbara is a patroness saint deeply ingrained in the culture of Upper Silesia. It was chiefly the 19th century that was deciding in this respect, since the process of linking the martyr-woman to the miners’ occupational group was concluded then. The miners’ community played a significant role in the socioeconomic and identityrelated character of the region.
